Downgrading to Previous Software Version
To ensure the best experience for our users and their clients, EEG Store always recommends using the latest version and branch of the software available. If this is not possible, the software can be downgraded to a previous version while preserving data.
Please note that when upgrading the software, it is always recommended to create a backup of local files on the computer. This prevents accidental data loss and makes it much easier to downgrade back to a previous version of the software. We highly encourage users to follow the full installation instructions found in this article when upgrading or reinstalling the software.
Downgrading From EEGer 440t or Later
When downgrading from 440t or Later to a previous version, it is safe to install the old version over the existing EEGer folder. Please follow the instructions in this article to install EEGer onto the computer.
Note: Downgrading from 440t and 440u has only been significantly tested when downgrading to 440s or 440r, downgrading to a prior version or software branch may cause errors. If you encounter issues, please contact EEG Store for additional troubleshooting.
Downgrading From EEGer 440s or Prior
Downgrading With a Renamed EEGer Folder (Locally Saved Backup)
If the instructions for upgrading or reinstalling the software were followed, the process for downgrading the software is extremely simple:
- Open the Windows File Explorer by pressing Win+E on the keyboard.
- In the left-hand column of the file explorer, navigate to the C: drive.
- Locate the EEGer folder at C:/EEGer - rename this folder to something that can be easily identified in the future if needed - EEGer New Version, EEGer 440s, etc.
- Locate the renamed EEGer folder or backup that was made during the installation process - rename this folder to just EEGer.
- Exit the Windows File Explorer and open EEGer using the desktop or taskbar shortcut. When EEGer opens, it should be on the old/backup version of the software with all the data stored on that version.
- To copy new session data or files that were created on the new version of the software (which is now renamed), follow the instructions in this article.
Downgrading Without a Renamed EEGer Folder (Overridden or Deleted During Install Process)
In essence, these instructions will follow the same steps outlined in the full installation instructions. Instead of installing the latest version of the software, however, we will download a previous version of the software.
Preparations for Installation
- Open the Windows File Explorer by pressing Win+E on the keyboard.
- In the left-hand column of the file explorer, navigate to the C: drive.
- Locate the EEGer folder at C:/EEGer - rename this folder to something that can be easily identified in the future if needed - EEGer New Version, EEGer 440s, etc.
- Download the desired version of the software from the EEGer Support Site:
EEGer4 440 Software Branch: Link
EEGer4 430 Software Branch: Link
If installing EEGer from CD, the installer files on these disks will be used. - Ensure that there is no EEG amplifier or EEGer security dongle connected to the computer. Having these devices connected at this stage can cause files to fail to install during the installation process.
Installation Process
- Locate and run the EEGer software installer that was previously downloaded (likely in the Downloads folder of the computer). For most installations, the default installation options are okay to accept (click OK or Yes when prompted).
- Once the installer has finished, connect the EEG amplifier and EEGer security dongle, if available.
- Ensure that the taskbar is set to autohide to allow EEGer to properly display.
- Ensure that the connected displays are set to a resolution of 1920x1080p, and that they do not have additional scaling or zoom set above 100%, as this can also impact how EEGer displays information.
- Ensure that any additional games or utilities are installed.
- If necessary, ensure that the latest enabling keyfile is installed. This keyfile will 'unlock' the software and allow for live sessions, as well as enabling additional games or features if purchased/installed. This can also be done from within the software as needed.
- Set antivirus and Windows Defender/Windows Security exceptions for EEGer and its games.
- Open the EEGer4 neurofeedback software.
First-Time Startup
Please Note: Older versions and branches of the software may lack features included below, or feature different button labels or backgrounds. Due to the many different versions of software, it is impossible to cover all of these variations in this article. It is always recommended to use the latest branch and version of the software to ensure the best experience for both the user and their clients.
Upon opening EEGer for the first time, several prompts can appear. Close or dismiss these notifications to get to the software's main screen. These include:
- Dual Monitor Warning
- Taskbar Warning
- Client Backup Reminder
- Amplifier Configuration Check
- Operator Name Query
EEGer will open in single-monitor mode by default for a fresh installation - adjust the computer's display mode before continuing. If connecting an external display via HDMI, ensure that the playback devices are set correctly to ensure reward sounds are heard.
Game Initialization Tool & Installing Additional Games
If installing a version prior to 440s, a red message will be present in the center of the screen saying that the games are not found. This is okay, as we will now scan the system for installed games. This will detect the base games that come with EEGer, as well as any additional feedback displays that have been installed. If additional games need to be installed, these steps should be followed after any additional games are installed. Instructions on installing additional feedback displays (games) can be found here.
The process for running the Game Initialization Tool is as follows:
- Open EEGer and navigate to Tools>Game Initialization Tool from the top toolbar of EEGer's main screen.
- After a moment, a list of installed games should appear. Click Done-Save Configuration at the bottom of the menu.
- Click SAVE all games at the bottom of the next menu and return to EEGer's main screen.
Configuring EEGer for Correct EEG Amplifier
By default, EEGer is configured for the A202 amplifier. If using a different model of EEG Amplifier, the software can be configured in the settings menu:
- Open EEGer and navigate to Options>EEGer Configuration Options>Devices from the top toolbar of EEGer's main screen.
- Locate option 6 Source of EEG/peripheral data and select the connected device from the dropdown list. If the device is not present on this list, you may need to first enable experimental/investigational devices.
- If using a BrainMaster, Pocket Neurobics, or ThoughtTechnology amplifier, additional settings will need to be adjusted to complete the configuration process.
- Pocket Neurobics Instructions - (U-Wiz, Q-Wiz)
- Neurobit Optima Instructions - (Optima 2, Optima+ 4)
- ThoughtTechnology Instructions - (ProComp2)
- Click Close preferences window in the bottom-right of the option menu to apply any changes and return to EEGer's main screen,
